Renting Machinery for Construction and Terms for Equipment

Many contractors choose to rent the machinery used for construction. Terms for equipment are sometimes written in such a way that the contractor would have been better off purchasing the equipment outright. Given the number of sources for used equipment, there is no reason that a reasonably busy contractor should not be able to afford to purchase their own equipment. Much of that equipment will be in a condition which, while not new, will be reliable and have the benefit of having all of its regular maintenance requirements met by the agency that owned the equipment previously.

Construction is undeniably hard on equipment and, to that end, the majority of this machinery is incredibly durable but only so long as the organization that owned it adhered to the maintenance schedule. This machinery is deceptively fragile in ways. Even though it may weigh several tons, a bulldozer, a front-end loader and a backhoe are all very precision devices that require all of their systems to be cared for and maintained by a qualified individual. Most of this equipment will have several complex mechanical and hydraulic systems that must be maintained in addition to the regular fixing or replacing of tires and tracks and so forth.

Construction equipment, if it is purchased, will need to be looked after by a qualified diesel mechanic. This field of mechanics has its own terms and procedures relative to gasoline mechanics and the engines, while they may operate on the same broad principles, differ in significant ways. A diesel engine, for example, has a completely different method of combusting its fuel than does a gasoline engine, requires different parts and has a different maintenance schedule than a less-durable gasoline engine. Of course, diesel engines are famously powerful, efficient and long lasting which is the reason why they're used in construction equipment, semi trucks and other hard-working equipment.

While smaller contractors may be stuck renting machinery and, thus, being subject to the terms and conditions of the agreement as well as the availability of the equipment itself, busier contractors would be much better off making purchases. State governments, federal government agencies and large construction companies frequently auction off their machinery when it becomes too old for their use. While it may have too many hours of service racked up for a large agency, for smaller contractors whose demands are less intense such used equipment can provide many years of good service.
