Finding Affordable Construction Machinery and Equipment

Construction machinery and equipment can easily cost into the tens of thousands of dollars. For small contractors, this oftentimes means that equipment is rented and that a needed piece of machinery cannot be engaged on the schedule under which they're working. This situation can mean lost time, lost money and lost contracts. Such contractors can, however, purchase equipment which is used but in excellent condition at prices which are very affordable. Depending on the origin of the machinery, it may be almost as good as new.

The government, both state and federal, maintain huge fleets of machinery. This construction equipment can oftentimes be purchased for a steeply-discounted rate at auction. Best of all, this equipment is almost guaranteed to have been maintained according to the recommended schedule. These agencies have full-time mechanics whose entire job is to see to it that the machines are repaired and maintained and, even if the construction machinery has quite a few hours on it, it will likely be in excellent condition and more than suitable for use by a smaller private contractor.

If one is purchasing equipment from an individual, a dealer or a larger contractor, one must make some effort to ensure that it is in proper working order. This is not only necessary to protect one's investment but to make certain that one's equipment is in compliance with the various safety regulations required by the government. Running afoul of these regulations can be very expensive and, of course, because they are designed to protect the life and limb of the operators and workers near the equipment, the consequences can be far more significant than a financial setback. One must have the equipment inspected, preferably by a mechanic who specializes in such machinery.

If one is lucky enough to find a source of affordable construction machinery, the real responsibility begins after the purchase. This equipment is tough but it takes a beating that most people couldn't even begin to imagine. If one has more than two or three pieces of such machinery under their ownership, it is probably best to either hire a professional mechanic or engage one's services on a retainer-type arrangement. Diesel mechanics have a specialty skill and, despite the famous durability of these devices they are very much precision machines and require that the owner adheres to a regular schedule of maintenance and repair unless they wish to purchase the equipment again.
